A burst pipe, an overflowing toilet or a sudden leak can turn into a stressful, costly situation fast. As emergency plumbers covering London and South East England, we get called out to these exact scenarios every day — and we've seen how a few quick actions in the first five minutes can make a huge difference to the amount of damage caused.
Here's exactly what to do while you wait for your emergency plumber to arrive.
1. Turn Off Your Main Water Supply
The single most effective thing you can do is shut off the water at the mains stopcock. This is usually located under the kitchen sink, in a downstairs cupboard, or near the front of the property where the water supply enters. Turning the valve clockwise will stop the flow of water and buy you time until help arrives.
2. Switch Off Electrics Near The Leak
Water and electricity are a dangerous combination. If the leak is anywhere near sockets, switches or appliances, turn off the electricity at the consumer unit (fuse box) for that area, or the whole property if you're unsure.
3. Contain The Water
Use towels, buckets and basins to catch and contain water where you safely can. If water is coming through a ceiling, place a bucket underneath and, if it's safe to do so, pierce a small hole at the lowest point of the bulge to release pressure in a controlled way rather than letting the ceiling collapse.
4. Move Valuables & Furniture
Move electronics, furniture and valuables away from the affected area. Lifting rugs and furniture off wet flooring can also prevent staining and further damage while you wait.
5. Take Photos For Your Insurance
Before you start cleaning up, take clear photos and videos of the damage. Most home insurance policies will ask for this evidence, and having it ready speeds up any claim significantly.
